“Watching”
One day in 1889, Theodore Roosevelt decided to leave camp and try for deer. He began searching for a suitable spot where he could conceal himself and wait for some game to appear. TR had walked quite a distance from camp by the time he found the ideal spot – the ridge above a sheer slope, where a wide game trail led into a valley. Pine trees grew on each side of the trail, and in the distance he could see a small mountain lake.
The afternoon light was waning when, like a ghost, a cougar suddenly appeared on the trail. It had come down from a rock outcrop just behind TR. He wondered how long it had been there watching him.
